Businesses in Croydon, south London might want to focus on stepping up their security this year, be it through the installation of CCTV cameras and motion-sensitive lighting or even more retail security officers, given new figures revealing that violent crime is up in the borough.
Official police figures, published by This is Local London, indicate that police in the area handled 513 more crimes between April last year and the end of March 2015, an increase of 1.8 per cent on the previous year.
A 17 per cent rise in wounding and GBH cases was seen, as was a 36 per cent hike in the number of incidents involving violence against a person. However, robberies and burglaries were down, with drops of 38 per cent and 19 per cent respectively.
“Croydon is getting safer and these figures should reduce the fear of crime in all of our communities. Violent crime remains a challenge, as does theft of motor vehicles and this is what we will be focusing on reducing in the next 12 months,” Croydon borough commander Andy Tarrant was quoted as saying.
Employing a security company to help you protect your business and members of staff is always advisable, especially if you live somewhere with a high crime rate. Consider employing someone to carry out nightly patrols of your premises to make sure no one is lurking around and also think about installing extra security lights in your car park so workers can make it to their vehicles safely after dark.
